Bought My First Property

After so many years of working in the building and property industry, i finally bought my own piece of real estate last week. Actually the home isn’t there, it will only be ready in 3 years time. Its a small little townhouse near my current place, its near a lake and is one of the last phase in a large development.

What made me buy it? I’ve been wanting to invest in property for a long time, but finding the right one has been a monumental task. Prices of homes keep going up and up, I think this is one fact that Malaysians have resigned to accept. A newly wed couple will have only two choices in the coming future, either pay for a small apartment, or live far away to get somewhere affordable and commute daily. I don’t see any other solution.

Android or the iPhone?

Looking to getting an internet-ready phone, since my 2 year old Sony Ericsson is dying out on me. I could get a similarly priced model, but the lure of newer Android phones is irresistable. Android phones are pretty new on the market, so they have all the cool features like super-Amoled screens and nifty apps you can download for free.

Looking at Android phones also made me consider the iPhone. While the new version 4 is way too expensive for me, I was looking at the 16G 3Gs. While this model has been around for some time and is now being phased out, it has all the cool features that made the iPhone famous and its quite reasonably priced. But as my friend says, everyone already has it and it isnt as cool and exciting as Android. But Apple still is cool.

Silver and Gold Have I None

“Silver and gold have I none, but such as i have give I thee…”

goes the old refrain I used to sing in Sunday school as a precocious kid. In the context of Sunday school, that song was about the Jesus replying the lame beggar asking for money. Instead of giving him money, Jesus healed him. Interesting story, but it illustrates the point I want to make.

Back in the first century AD then, the people already knew the value of gold and silver, the Romans used it as a sign of riches and to mint nuggets and coins. Even a thousand years before that, the Greeks and Egyptians layered their monuments and artifacts with gold to symbolized wealth and beauty. Today gold still holds the standard to which everything else is compared. So it makes perfect sense to invest and buy gold coins as a hedge against the future.

United States Gold Bureau offers a good way for you to find the investment that is right for you.

WordPress 3.0!

Yep, I’ve just updated my blog to the latest WP3.0. Its been a long time coming, in fact I haven’t updated it since I started this blog all those years ago. Last I checked it was still version 2.2 (I’m serious!) so its timely to upgrade.

Besides the better interface and layout, I’ve also opted to change the template, the basic template that came with the first installation was far too common and unspectacular. I’m currently looking for more suitable themes, but for now this will be the chosen one.

Thanks, WordPress for supporting us with great products, best of all its free.

Spain Are the World Champions!

Too bad I’m not a gambling man, coz I had picked Spain and they won the world Cup!!! La Furia Rojas!

It was worth staying up until 5am for it, the deservedly won the tense final. In the end only one goal by Iniesta in the extra time settled it. Once he scored, i knew there was no coming back… Netherlands have only themselves to blame, for playing negatively. Why? Maybe the wanted to win on penalties, I don’t know.

So Spain! Champions of Europe and the world!!!

Netherlands v. Spain

The Oranj versus the Red Furies. The pragmatists versus the artists. Well, not really, but one of these teams will walk away with their very first world cup medal this Sunday. In a way, its good that it won’t be one of the old teams winning. The last time this happened was in 1998 when France won on their home soil.

All in all, there were lots of winners and losers in this world cup. Besides the two teams in the final, was a good tournament for Paraguay, Uruguay, New Zealand, Slovakia and maybe Ghana. For the Italians and the French, they can’t forget it soon enough. Also Australia and Portugal were disappointing.

So who will I rooting for? I’ve been pretty neutral this whole tourney, but with Fabregas playing for Spain, they have my edge of support (van Persie has been absent for Arsenal this whole season).

Surviving a Tough Patch

My friend Greg worked in the TV industry. He isn’t a big shot writer or producer, but he does play a small and significant part in the everyday production of TV shows, and he’s experience working there is an endless source of lively anecdotes whenever we meet up.

But some time back during the writers strike organized by the WGA, he was hit bad. For a length of time, he was out of work. He wasn’t a member of the WGA and wasn’t directly on strike, but due to the strike production halted and he wasn’t working. No work meant no pay. No pay meant lots and lots of problem, especially for Greg who has a family to feed and a mortgage to pay.

But due to some wise investment he made over the years, he was able to keep afloat during the strike (plus he also moonlighted as a delivery boy for his friend’s catering business). He smartly invested in buy gold eagle coins (actually i was the one who told him about it, after reading so much about it via the United States Gold Bureau. Gold and silver is an easy investment option, and you can get decent returns from it.

What Happened to England?

So now after a few weeks of retrospect, we can look back to England’s fortune and try to understand what went wrong with their world cup campaign. First of all, I’m not particular a big England fan, but after decades of following English football closely, you can’t help but feel affinity for them and their players i’ve come to know so well.

So after all the hype about Capello, his tactics failed him. He had to endure derision because even after all the talk of sophisticated Italian strategy, they had to employ the pump-and-run whenever they were behind in a game. And the players, well, they all looked tired after a long season of footie, and there aren’t any new or exciting players in the team. It was still back to the same old players – Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Cole. So many of them too old to explode in the World Cup.

Well, here’s looking to the next WC with a completely re-built team.

World Cup 2010

World Cup fever is back on. I don’t get to watch all the matches, since the time is not really suitable, but every opportunity I get, I try to catch them even if it means less time for my reading.

It’s now the Round of 16, and other than the usual European and Latin American suspects, the only other 4 teams are USA, Ghana (one of which will be out) and Asian stalwarts SKorea and Japan. Of course all the big guns are still in contention – Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Portugal. France and Italy are out in the group stages, the former not surprising, but the Italians are defending champions.

Looking ahead to the finals, both Brazil and Argentina are strong. Let’s hope we have more goals and action rather than dour defensive tactics.

Gold and Black Gold

The big news recently is the oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil, or petroleum, is very expensive because it is getting scarcer and harder to drill for. That’s why since its discovery, it has been also known as ‘black gold’. Why ‘black gold’ in the first place?

That is because gold, far above oil and any other natural resource, is the most precious and sought after mineral. Wars and murders have taken place since the dawn of time over this mineral, and even today, it still stands as the highest ideal of beauty and desireability. That also means investing in gold is a good way to make money, since the demand for it is ever increasing. One method of this investment is simply to buy gold coins. Gold and silver coins form an easy and safe way to invest your money in, and it is easily converted to cash later on.
